Love Walked In - believable?

I mentioned earlier what lead to the choosing of this title, its critical acclaim and recent followup and, just to add, its availability in the library and in paperback. I was maybe 2 pages in when I started thinking I walked right into Chick-Lit. Not that that's a bad thing. I just wouldn't have known that from the reviews I read previously such as those in Novelist. After reading the whole book, I wonder if that's really a fair label for the book at all since it incorporates several "heavier " themes, notably grief and mental illness. These are not typical themes that Chick-Lit characters encounter.
---
What major themes did you find in the book? Did you feel like the characters and plot were "real" ?
Have you ever experienced anything similar to the events in the book to compare?

I like chick-lit and because of the contemporary story line of the single girl and her quirky friends and relationships I would consider this a great example. But I would add that just like other chick-lit titles it does have more than meets the eye.

I thought that the characters reactions to the deaths was a little less than real. I imagine that it would be hard to change the tone of the book and keep the story going with too much emphasis on grieving. I did like the way it shows you the effect of a parents mental illness on children. That's a storyline I don't often see especially from the perspective of a child.

The only character I didn't fully "get" was Martin. Why was he so detached from his own child? Did he really fall in love with Cornelia and did he love his first wife at all? Those are the questions I'm left with.
